I think that Ralph Waldo Emerson (who may not be so revered in France as he is here in the US-especially in New England) confessed that he never read a book through from beginning to end, but only looked into books to find answers for particular questions that were on his mind. He had the ability to intuit what was cogent (to him) in a book, and to zero in on that.

In pedagogy we talk about "active learning," which requires engagement of the student in critical thinking, not mere passive absorption of information. There is also "critical reading," of course--which is means carrying on a running argument with the author (not unlike the discourse in this forum).
