Massive central fireplaces acted both as heat storage as a referent structural point, maybe sometimes contributing heavily to the stability of the building, or perhaps mainly the roof. In that Wright was but recognizing old constructive tradition. On the other hand, exposed on the outside placements for chimneys would maximize the heat loss -both radiative and convective- towards the exterior, making them inefficient for their originating cause of being: to heat the building. This is not to say it must not be done...to be heretic to some mostly rational solution may produce some interesting strains of buildings.
