Current codes call for an exterior air supply for fireplaces.
International Residential Code for One and Two Family Dwellings (2000)page 269.
"Section R1005.1 Exterior air. Factory built or masonry fireplaces... shall be equipped with an exterior air supply to assure proper fuel combustion unless the room is mechanically ventilated and controlled so that the indoor pressure is neutral or positive."
Proper exterior air supply should eliminate any pressure problems.
Why is the furnace tucked away in the mechanical room or basement? Why is it an unattractive piece of steel cabinetry designed to hide the fire?
Why not substitute a well-designed, attractive fireplace design that performs the same function as the hidden furnace? We can either choose to hide the flame or make it visible. Using the fireplace to replace the furnace may require additional duct work to distribute the heat to prevent the unpleasant overheating of one location.
