When designing a fireplace as part of a wall, don't overlook the clearance requirements of the building codes. For chimney with flue lining - 1 inch (2.45 mm) clearance from masonary units to combustible sheathing; no combustibles abutting masonry within 12 inches of flue lining

Also: International Residential Code for 1- and 2-family Dwellings (2000) p. 268
"R1003.12 Fireplace clearance. All wood beams, joists, studs and other combustible material shall have a clearance of not less than two inches(51 mm) from the front faces and sides of masonry fireplaces and not less than four inches (102 mm) from the back faces of masonry fireplaces. The air space shall not be filled, except to provide fire blocking" (as defined elsewhere in the code).
