Intriguing theory--sounds plausible, but it would require more expertise than mine to verify the science involved.

Wasn't there an elevator penthouse with some provision for ejection of smoke and gas? Or would this venting be discouraged because the chimney effect would increased the spread of fire and smoke from a localized source?

Future code implications seem evident.
