progressive collapse ? The top floors came down like a piston because the destroyed floors were simply no longer supporting it - the forces, as JWm says, pulversided what was beneath.

The softened steel of the destroyed floors were no longer able to perform a structural function, and the floors below were already weakened.

What is remarkable is that the structures had absorbed the impact of the planes, and that they survived until the material of which they were constructed reached temperatures at which they were no longer able to perform. I believe that many lives were saved because of the success of the structural element of the façades - stopping the toppling of the buildings.
