From august '85 to november '89 I worked for the late próMemória Nat'l Foundfation on the restauration of a palace designed in 1860 by Gustav Von Whandel for the residence of the baron of Nova Friburgo that became, in the turn of the XIX century, the Presidential Office of Brazil, under the name of Palácio do Catete, till 1960 and presently acomodates a museum. As every president contributed to de-characterize the building with additions ranging from indoors swimming pool to rooftop helipoint. part of that time was spent trying to determine to wich period the restoration should be aimed for. The significance of the building derived not from the original ocupant but mostly from the following. Yet the original elements allowed for a refined environement.Antonio Piva states three different levels of fidelity in restoration : from the Disney level , that you can take from the distance, to the well preserved elements. In beween layes the problematic stratus where you have to avoid intuition to prevent fake.
