I did read your text - though I had only read the start of the comic-book thread. Illustrators work by looking through books and magazines for ideas and sometimes working from an original - there was a documentary about one who produces a series here in France. He said that he has to be particularly careful when drawing a gun because there are people who have nothing better to do than check the precision of his drawing against the original of a particular model.

Considering how influential Wagner's ideas became, there must be many buildings of similar look. Perhaps you could make a list of them and then investigate the cartoonist's - sorry, illustrator's - life history to see which was the most likely one for him to have used. In Britain, people who spend their time on such things are called "anoraks".
