Sounds like an ambitious project and I wish you luck. Unfortunately, there isn't a source book for all design and engineering issues which the novice can simply turn to chapter 22 and get specific details. Thats why it takes nearly 7 years just to get a design option degree (Masters) in our profession, and another 2 to achieve a Doctor of Design. My advice is don't try the design and engineering as a do-it-yourself project. Hire an architect or structural engineer and then build it yourself from qualified details. It will not only be safer, but you will know that the design considers the least expensive methods of structural accomodation as exist. You will probably save his/her fee in materials alone for the novice tends to oversize structural elements due to a lack of knowledge of engineering.
