We are planning to run the plans through a structural engineer, but the architects we have consulted are either not interested in a small project or are prohibitively expensive for a small project like this. There are thousands of similar houses built like this one and I was hoping someone would know of some references which discuss the attic renovation into living space. We have a rough draft of the floor plan already and are in the process of deciding whether to rip off the entire roof and rafters over the long back dormer or brace and recut the existing rafters to fit the new angle created by raising the roof. I am a professional myself * years college and professional school), and I appreciate the time and training that goes into a profession, but this is a little job compared to what you are trained for. My husband is a welder and mechanic by trade and is quite accomplished with drywall, framing, plumbing and electrical work, and installing windows. At one time or another he has worked with professionals in all these areas and learned what he can do and what we better hire someone else to do. Plenty of other professional tradesmen will be hired to get this job to completion, but we are on a limited budget, so this will largely be our project, like it or not.
