If I remember correctly the larkin building was demolished due to a need for parking. An old professor of mine kept comparing it to the town we lived in, where all the decent buildings were replaced with parking lots. No real reference though, but considering how most cities are planned, it makes sense that something stupid like that was done, they never need a good reason to do something insane, they only need to justify things that are needed.
