I've been meaning to mention this for a while.   Here's one low-impact method for gradually build your understanding of architectural design issues:

Each day, visit the   Daily Building.

Look over the pictures, drawings, commentary, 3D model, and/or whatever is provided to help you get a feeling for the building.

Then thoughtfully answer these two questions:

1) What makes this a great building?

(Note: There should be more than one answer. There are many great things about a great building.)

2) Pick an aspect of the design that is surprising to you, or that doesn't immediately make sense to you, whether visual or functional, and then answer this question:  Why did the building designers make it that way?

To make this richer and more fun, get a couple of friends to join you each day, and share and discuss your answers.

When you get an answer that really clicks, share it with the rest of us, by posting it here at at the Great Buildings Forum. It may sound a little nerdy, but if you start out by thinking about what makes for timeless quality in architecture, and then learn to talk about it, and then even learn to write about it, this thinking will eventually become natural and easy. And that's a great increase in your architectural capaibility.

If you can't handle the daily pace, then take the slow road and just focus on the the extra-special selections for the Building of the Week.

Cheers,

K
