the mews developments are slightly different because the original of the alley behind the small houses was very small. It is interesting to see that the mews development - the gentrification - only worked in the most expensive areas. In recent years, and in slightly less affluent areas, it has been replaced by "courtyard" developments which rebuild the whole thing with tiny houses or flats.I suppose that that was inevitable, because the biggest and nicest mews were in the areas which used to have the best carriages and the most horses - Belgravia, Mayfair, Knightsbridge, Kensington.
there are some areas where poor workers' housing has become expensive (like Battersea or Islington). Do they work ? Not really - they are still poky little houses. I am not sure if they have been "gentrified" in the north of England, but I doubt if it is very wide spread. It would be interesting to see the size of the scheme houses to see how big/small they really are.
