Thoughtful observations. I think that "gesture" comes closest to the mark--"gesture" as the personal mark, the private sign, unconscious (or subconscious) expressionism. This is what is so arrogantly egocentric about such proposals--the presumption that we should care about the designer's psyche. Not me.

The larger issue of aesthetics is of course the relation between a classical sort of objectivity and a romantic sort of subjectivity. That's a very large subject. Oddly, I have long been an admirer and collector of abstract expressionist paintings. How do I reconcile what an "action painter" does, making a "gesture" on canvas, and the "gesture" made the designer of a hundred story building?

The question may answer itself.
