The school at which I teach has similar problems with (especially 'younger') students inability to make good drawings using digital media. Early drawings are often mechanistic, uninspired and dry.
However, I find that usually this is not so much a problem with the media itself, but with the students' lack of knowledge of how to make a good drawing, period.
The more adroit final year (masters) students invariably make better, and sometimes fantastic drawings using digital media than the first & second years.
There seems to be a false idea planted in the minds of many students (and some faculty) that hitting the "render" button at any point in your process is all you need to do to produce an architectural drawing. This almost invariably leads to dry, mechanical drawings that could have been produced by a calculator, whereas the expressive potential of something like digital media is much greater. Also, I find that there is a definite correlation between a students hand-drawing abilty, and his/her ability to create expressive drawings with digital media.
