The Louvre's space has tremendous metaphoric power. Its siting, looking toward the Place de la Concorde, Champs Elysee and the Arc, creates a kind of linear inevitability that makes one think, If I were to rule the world, I think this would be my headquarters. I was overcome with the feeling of finality the building gave me on my last visit. But sitting up in one of the Louvre's cafes, looking down at the Pei's pyramids, I picked up for the first itme a reference to The Pyramids. The ambitions and unrepentant grandeur that both the Louvre and the Pyramids share are reduced in scale, made transparent, and perhaps pierced by those little glass pyramids. After all, there were regular folks lined up around the block to wander through this former palace. As world dictator, I'll probably have them removed when I move in.
