I agree with Paul regarding the use of "=" signs in this equation;however, I also go a step further and disagree with the order due to definition of terms. In my learnings, it would be "function..form..mass"wherein the function is simply the function of the building you are designing. What will it house, what will be the activities for which it is designed. This will dictate its form. Example: a building housing a bowling alley has a very different form from one housing a dove cote. The last is mass or as Paul eluded to "massing" which he explained is used differently in architecture. This is the proportion aspect of the elements of the form. Example: depending upon the form required of the function, massing corrects the elements of design to compensate for differing shapes to a very narrow, pre-prescribed set of architecturally pleasing proportions. If you have a very low long form (bowling alley), windows, canopies and roof elements must be adjusted to compensate for the "squatty" form. Conversely, if you have a very narrow, tall structure (dove cote) then these must be re-adjusted to the golden ratios.
