From the article cited above: "Students at Mendocino High School conducted research into the Temple's cultural importance. This motivated community fundraising for saving the temple..."
"The California Preservation Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of California's historic built environment. They sponsor an annual conference and promote preservation through publications, advocacy, technical assistance, and this annual design awards program."
Is there any reason why we should not make a concerted effort to do the same thing in every community? Enlisting high school and even junior high/middle school students in efforts to create awareness of the value of historic and culturally significant buildings could lead to a greater appreciation and could result in less destruction of still useful buildings.
What do we do in our own communities to make others aware of the fact that not all people are of the opinion that "it's just a pile of bricks and mortar?"
