I about died laughing at the first Benny Hill posting above. I thought it was clear that the writer was saying that we should not judge the USA by the quality or content of its entertainment TV shows any more than we would judge Breat Britain by the content of Benny Hill shows. Wouldn't Benny have had fun with that concept!!! LOL
It should be sufficient to say that every country has its individuals who are good citizens and those who are its scoundrels and criminals. The United States of America is not Utopia, but then neither is France or Great Britain, or Russia, or China, or Zimbabwe, or Chile, or any other country. That does not stop any of us from trying to do what we can to try to improve the human condition.
In this forum we find a great diversity of thought. We come here as guests devoted to our interest in architecture. Talk about a group of optimists: designers, builders, contractors, architects, and those of similar interests can be described as eternal optimists. If not optimistic that our designs would be completed, then we sould surely give up and go live in a cave.
We find here people who are interested in building up, rather than in tearing down and killing. It is easy to criticize the USA or any other country. It is more challenging to tell how one would go about creating a better social, political, economic, and built environment. I would encourage all who are determined to criticize, to also tell what they would do to improve the situation.
What can we in the building and architectural community do to further the idealistic goals of the United Nations? How can we make the world a better place? Should we be considering this at all, or should we just build for the sake of building?
Wouldn't you rather join in building up rather than in tearing down?
