I am a civil engineer with a great respect for architecture. I, too, am sorry this house has been destroyed. Your arguments for preservation remind me smacks of the property rights arguments for land developers: the house was purchased by the Rothenburgs, it belonged to them, and they destroyed it -- as they had that right through ownership. We cannot deny them that option, just as we cannot declare private land (property) as a nature preserve, greenspace, or park without compensating the owner.

In Europe, as a previous commenter noted, this would have never happened. I agree, but point out that Europeans have a deeper sense of heritage, history, and cultural achievement that US natives have not yet developed.

The demolition of this house was a mistake, in my opinion. Without purchasing the house myself, however, I have no right to stop its demolition.
