The question that arises is whether the purchasers of this property had any sense of its intrinsic value. Probably not, or they might not have destroyed it. Rather than faulting them for thier insensitivity, maybe we should recognize that a better program of public information and education might have saved this and other valuable works of architecture.
I don't know if there is any preservation organization in Palm Springs (which I doubt, as the place doesn't strike me as sort of milieu that would have much of a sense of history or architecture). They may appreciate Frank Sinatra's old digs, because he was a celbrity. But Neutra? Who's Neutra?
Architects, particularly modernists, have not always been supportive of saving old buildings. When a modern building is lost, however, we hear much moaning about the loss. It any buildings are to be spared, we need a broad coalition of support. Modernists can't achieve much without the alliance of the rest of the preservation community.
