Of course, ugliness is in the eye of the beholder. I suppose there are those who find the Gehry production lovely--not me, as you know.

But I agree that beauty is not an absolute, and much depends upon context. As we've said before, there is a place for the foreground icon, like the Sydney Opera House, which works where it is. Put it on Fifth Avenue, next to the Guggenheim, however, and it would be a disaster. I think that Liebeskind's addition to the V&A in London will be a disaster, as well Gehry's addition to the Corcoran in Washington, DC. We shouldn't sell all-purpose icons to be intruded into any urban situation.
