Well said. I recall one historic property, one of the Great Camps of the Adirondacks, with century-old rustic log buildings, where a prominent modern architect added a white, Meieresque building--with iron pipe rails and the rest of the International Style clichés. This designer had to put his imprint on the work--lest it fail to fit into the portfolio of his work that he intended to publish some day. It was an outrage.

At the other extreme, I have designed infill buildings in historic neighborhoods which are indistinguishable from surrounding 19th century structures.

As observed previously, I must be unprincipled.
