car styling is of course a very different area, but I used the example as one which has used design in a way which brings together the old and the new. Of course this very often happens in architecture as well, but it seems that there is a risk of simpler solutions being accepted.

if architectural design evolves by respecting the history and life of its surroundings, then surely it results in a more human level of project with a greater chance of being accepted.

I do not pretend that this is easy, and - as you say - it is often the problem that the architect is faced with which is the problem, but increasingly the references appear to be inappropriate design foibles rather than humanity of scale and respect for surroundings.

whether it is a more complex discipline or not, simplistic 'shock' designs look like cheap theatrics. Automotive design is moving ahead very successfully in my view - in architecture, there is less of a buzz, less appreciable excitement in the designs, less enjoyment, with the result that one option is the crude shock effect.
