I would just point out that the Heavy Gilt Trip in French design does still exist. There are shops here in Nice which offer what, for want of a better term, could be described as Cheap Versailles. It is wonderfully showy and wonderfully tacky.

The French however describe it as "Venetian" ........

no doubt "Rococco Jacques" Pochoy can tell us more.
