One can gain some appreciation of what it must have been like in the cities of the early 20th century and before by visiting Amish country in Pennsylvania or Ohio, USA. The Amish people still use horse and buggy transportation for religious reasons. Visiting some of these villages on a nice hot summer day can give you a greater appreciation of what our ancestors experienced.

Speaking of horses, does anyone know of any good examples of stable architecture in your neighborhood. I once visited a restaurant in Canton, Ohio, USA, that had once been a fancy stable. It is constructed of stone masonry with a circular design. It has round turrets. It is not far from the Pro-Football Hall of Fame building which has a roof structure that is shaped like a football.
