well, I dunno... I'm only guessing here, but MAYBE the 'event' in coventry was more significant in many people's eyes due to the circumstances/timing surrounding its occurance? and MAYBE that's why it garnered more attention?

just as the event of a surprise attack on unsuspecting civilians is somewhat different in nature than an air raid by a nation that you are openly at war with.

and in regard to "the media": do you, with your history-of-birmingham addled brain somehow NOT understand that the attack on the wtc WAS AN ATTACK DIRECTED AT THE MEDIA? HELLO?? that was the WHOLE POINT..
OF COURSE it's going to be 'blown out of proportion' in THE MEDIA.. THE WHOLE THING HAPPENED LIVE ON TELEVISION AS MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WATCHED PEOPLE DIE! not to mention the millions of people in new york that day, including many members of the WORLD NEWS MEDIA, who stood and watched FIRST HAND as people died. of course there was going to be a huge reaction. (that's the real objective of terrorists after all. the loss of life was just a bonus for them.)

did anything like THAT happen at birmingham, coventry, or anywhere else for that matter? on that scale? THINK for a second, and don't be so smug. this was not an ordinary act of war, it was terrorism on a grand scale. it was not only an unprecedented type of attack on the US, but an unprecedented media event.

so martin, please don't try to criticize anyone else here for having any sort of 'lack of perspective' when YOU are the one who can only ever discuss any subject in terms of how it relates to your town, and what you saw on tv today. it's really kind of laughable. and in terms of an awareness of HISTORY? you clearly don't even understand the history that's unfolding around you.

(and please don't bother replying with some vaguely related minutia of birmingham's history, because no one cares, and it's really not that interesting.)

(same goes for whatever vague generalized opinions you may have gleaned about "americans" today by watching television, because that's REALLY not interesting.)
