No, I didn't say that architecture was "to show tourists ONLY." I merely mentioned that as an example of the value of IDENTITY. This value may be appreciate some places more than others.
Many years ago clients in Puerto Rico, a Caribbeanisland with a historic Spanish heritage, wanted from us (here in New York) a new bank building. They insisted on an all glass enclosed skyscraper, because they wanted to look "just like New York." It was preposterous in the torrid climate, with an incredible heat gain from the constant tropical sun.
We have a saying, refering to animals grazing, "The grass seems greener on the other side of the fence." I suppose many people in many parts of the world want to wear blue jeans, drink Coke, and eat McDonalds' fast food--because its "just like New York." Of course we here in New York don't think that's so great and many of us fear a world where every city is "just like New York."
People need to have their own identity, not seek to change to imitate others. I'm certainly not advocating the "International Style" idea of the 1920's. I wish some of superstar architects today would stay home, instead of building the same sort of museums in cities all over the globe. Why did Spain need an American architect --and why does America at the same time need a Spanish architect ?
Do you want some New York architect coming to your country to design your most important buildings? But if your work merely imitates New York, why won't your clients go for the real thing, hiring a world-class New York firm?
