A good idea is a good idea, regardless of who proposed it. When it comes to architecture or engineering, it is sometimes best to leave the details to a professional who has the background and training to provide the services necessary for building a good design or providing a reliable structural solution.
We should all encourage people to express their ideas. We should not reject an idea simply because it is proposed by someone without credentials. If the idea is sound, then a professionally trained person should be able to provide the necessary support.
Too often, good ideas are rejected because the person who proposes the idea is not a "leader" or one who is "in with the in crowd." That can be true in the general public and it can be true within an architectural office - call it "office politics," if you like.
Do not give up on your good ideas, but do keep an open mind that some of our "good ideas" may have flaws that others can see more clearly than we can ourselves.
The proposal to cover the open area with a membrane or with plastic may not be consistent with what "the powers that be" have in mind. Do not hesitate to present your ideas and be prepared to listen to any criticism of them. It is a fact of life with other people that not all of your good ideas will be accepted. Do not let this keep you from presenting other ideas or in pursuing this particular idea.
