THIS LETTER HAS BEEN FORWARDED TO THE DEPARTMENT OF CULTURE TODAY:

"Don't destroy our library" (Your Letters, "Evening Mail", Birmingham 2.7.02)

"Can no-one stop the council tearing down the Central Library and replacing it with an office block?

It will spoil the surrounding area and stop people from being able to walk through to Centenary Square and Brindley Place.

The library is used by thousands of people. It is central so people can go there at lunchtime and do some studying and it is also a meeting place. There is public transport, buses, trains and a handy car park.

Around it are places to eat and drink and a couple of halls where music and plays are performed.

If the new library is built at Eastside as planned, the only people who will use it are the students and it will be lost forever to Birmingham people. It will be out of the way and how will people get there with no trains or buses and car parks at £4.50 a time?

Please, please people of Birmingham, write to, telephone or email your councillor and let your views be known."
Concerned Brummie,
Billesley
