Dear Architecture Week,

I am Event Producer for the 'Cities on the Edge' Conference which is to take place from 9-11 October 2002 in Melbourne, Australia.

The conference falls under the banner of the CityEdge Program, which in turn falls under the aegis of the City Projects Division (Design), City of Melbourne.

The CityEdge team would be very grateful if the conference could be listed on your site, under the 'conferences' link.

The history of the CityEdge Program and details of this year's conference are as follows:

__________________________________________________________________

Hosted by the City of Melbourne since 1999, CityEdge is an internationally renowned urban design conference series fostering discussion and debate on critical urban design, architecture and planning issues facing cities in the new millennium. Through specific local and international case studies, the CityEdge International Urban Design Conference Series focuses on such issues and experiences, by providing a forum for architects, landscape architects, urban designers and planners to review the development of our cities. The series has brought together some of the most innovative international architects and planners who have been responsible for reshaping cities around the world including Paris, Barcelona, Beijing, Beirut, Bangkok and Berlin.

CityEdge1 took place from 24-26 March 1999, with the theme ‘Private Development vs. Public Realm?’ This inaugural CityEdge conference was groundbreaking, innovative and applauded for its contemporary critique of urban design and planning issues for world cities in the new millennium. CityEdge1 united capital city Lord Mayors, private and public sector planners, architects and academia. It fostered Australia’s first and foremost urban design event and gave a global perspective on contemporary urban design and planning initiatives that addresses the rejuvenation of city cores and peripheries.

Building on the success of CityEdge1, the CityEdge2 International Urban Design Conference Series was launched by the series founder and director Esther Charlesworth under the aegis of the City Projects Division, City of Melbourne. The first event of the CityEdge2 series was a public lecture titled ‘Reinventing the Edge: Bilbao, Jerusalem’, held at the Capitol Theatre, Melbourne on 28 September 2000. Former Mayor of Bilbao Josu Ortuondo and City of Jerusalem architect Arie Rahamimoff participated. The City of Melbourne then hosted the second event in this series from April 19-20 2001. ‘Centre vs. Periphery?’ explored themes of architectural and landscape interventions on the ‘edge’ of city areas and on the conceptual ‘edge’ of architecture and urban design.

The CityEdge2 series began in September 2000 with a public lecture titled ‘Reinventing the Edge: Bilbao, Jerusalem’, held at the Capitol Theatre, Melbourne.

‘Cities on the Edge?’ is the third and final event of the CityEdge2 event trio and will explore the themes of architectural and planning interventions in a range of cities ‘under fire’ from Kabul, Johannesburg and New York to Dili, Mostar and Belgrade. This forum will focus on the pivotal role that architects and built environment professionals can play in the reconstruction of these contested urban metropolises. Case study analyses of a series of contested urban metropolises at this year’s conference will therefore prompt discussion on the future role and capacity of architects, developers and planners in the reconstruction of urban sites of evisceration and in rebuilding the accelerating class of urban centres under fire. Hence the key themes of deconstruction, reconstruction and architectural responsibility , on which the conference sessions are based. These are ‘Cities on the Edge’, ‘Cities Virtualised’, ‘Cities in Crisis’ and ‘Cities Under Fire’. These session-based sub-themes are ‘brought home’ by a ‘Melbourne on the Edge’ session that comprises presentations on and a tour of Federation Square.

The ‘Cities on the Edge?’ Conference will be held in Melbourne from 9 to 11 October 2002 at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology’s (RMIT) Storey Hall, with the evening of 9 October being a public lecture by Hani Rashid of New York-based Asymptote Architecture. International and local speakers include, amongst others, Michael Sorkin, Hani Rashid, Mark Goulthorpe, Sultan Barakat, Amir Pasic, Jon Calame, Peter Davidson and Donald L. Bates, Peter Seamer and Norman Day.
