Fascinating! Perhaps asceticism is integral to the Japanese character, but more likely the excessive cost of land has required housing to be relatively cheap in order to be affordable at all.

My impression, however, on seeing the mode of construction was that it should be expensive, compared to our rough "stick-built" method of wood construction. But the machine-like precision that appears labor-intensive is, I gather, really mass produced, lowering the cost (but requiring standardization).
