At the same time as factory-built housing is relatively common in Japan, there is also growth in American-style modular framed construction, and there is also a substantial amount of more traditional light-timber-framed housing constructed.
Gordon, do you have current statistics on the proportion of different construction types in current Japanese single-family house building? Or is "most new houses are prefabricated" more of an impression?
BTW, we've worked with Misawa in collaboration with a Japanese partner company. I've been impressed with the high-level of design refinement achieved in at least some of their standardized houses...
