So happy you did this article. In the rainshadow of the Himalayas, I thought Ladaksh was one of the most beautiful places in the world; the people were quite amazing, too. In the recent weeks of coverage of separatist Kashmir in the western side of Jammu-Kashmir, I was saddened the by the lack of coverage of possible separatist demonstrations in the eastern city of Ladakh. While in Ladakh I saw extremely innovative techniques for building (plastered thick mud walls and beautiful latticed willow ceilings as you showed) and irrigation (lines drawn in the sand diverted pure streams from melting Himalayan snow from one garden to the next; when the watering was done, the lines were erased). Do you know how the other Ladakhi buildings were made? Was it a granite foundation with 1=2 foot thick granite walls covered in mud/cob plaster?
