Just a piece of info for the trivia seekers (if any) .. there has been a considerable Army (Indian, of course) presence in this region and very curious side-efects have been observed ....(architectural one) - well the kind of vernacular Baker has mentioned fitted the climate perfectly, but it seems thay are endangered since the Army has been meaningfully greening parts of the plateau (in an apparent bid to introduce Ladakhis to enhance their agricultural prowess) and which, in turn, has led to more rainfall - a factor which doesnt suit this vernacular!!! .....(non-architectural)- one of the batallions which was posted in Ladakh hailed mainly from a tribal belt in the north-east famous for their martial skills and penchant for dog-meat... the wooly creatures which strayed about in the streets of Ladakh disappeared before you could say "Om-mani-padme-hum"!!
