It requires energy to build, so buildings represent energy. Energy is power, so great buildings represent great power--not necessarily political or economic, of course, but sometimes the power of intellect, of imagination, or of will.

Achitects have always served the powerful. This is sometimes an embarassment, when the powerful are not admired.
