Architects have always served the powerful. This is sometimes an embarassment, when the powerful are not admired.

This seems to be a concept worthy of some deconstruction and analysis. Perhaps it has been more true in the past than it needs to be in the future. But even in the past, different architects have served the powerful (and wealthy) to different degrees. And some have been more choosy than others about _which_ of the powerful they would serve.

Given the relative youth of "architect" as an independent profession, one might hope for continued evolution, for instance in the area of professional architects.

I tend to think architects (hey, and planners, too) should have their own comparable to the Hippocratic oath, including the concept of "first, do no harm."
