"There is a real and urgent need for Switzerland to face up to its place in the world - whether it should join the EU and NATO, how its urban system should integrate with those of Germany, France and Italy, and how a radically devolved nation can take its place in a world community"
It truely is a difficult question for them. To date Switzerland has been an independent belligerent given the European context (in many ways this parallels our history here in the U.S.). This position has been criticized as being isolationist or even irresponsible, and yet it is exactly what saved them during WW2. I fear if the country does
engage the rest of Europe, future decisions will become burdened by their political ramifications....Switzerland will become much less in control of itself. .....off topic ; sorry. :)
As for the work of the Expo, I am not satisfied. While it may make important sociological statements, in the end it is cold, dark (damp?) and dare I say "ugly"? To me it shows again how "content" (literary, metaphoric, etc. etc.) has little to to with making beautiful architecture. Swiss architects have been creating some of the most elegant works in the world. Why not here?
