Good critique, Will--and while I don't find the building especially lovely, I do agree with the designe intent to create non-elitist architecture for such a facility. Most of our cities don't have a cultural elite sufficient to endow or patronize the traditional temple of high culture. A facility like this should be used seven nights a week, for all sort of popular events.

My firm did a major cultural center thirty years ago, similarly guided by this principle (likewise a brick building, in fact) so I'm naturally attuned to the guiding spirit of the project.
