I am suprised and somewhat amused by the discussion held about Peter Barber's winning scheme for Accommodating Change Housing Competition. Nonetheless, I am proud that the scheme is being discussed.
However, the discussions may have been more critical if one took the time to find out more about the scheme. Some architectural websites are merely designed to provide the public with a flavour of the work of the practice.
There are quite a lot of essays and articles written about this winning scheme.
Firstly, this is not a 'semi-detached' scheme as described by the discussions. The competition entry is largely dense double stack units. Detailed layouts of this double stack notched terraces were clearly displayed at the exhibition.
As for creating streets, we as designers make spaces happened. The essays published explains why the scheme has chosen such a direction into creating the street. It is not just two facades separated at X metres. One has to look into the entire scheme and understand the social connections.
Conceptual architectural drawings convey a message and a vision. It may not convey the same message for every individual. Perhaps it conveyed whatever the judges were looking for-Accommodating Change.
I am not arguing that this is a perfect scheme. There isn't a perfect project (professional or academic) out there. Like an essay, there is always room for improvment. This was a competition with a deadline. Haven't we been through this in architectural school ?
