I reviewed an edition of Wren's own writings a while back--very readible today and filled with fascinating tidbits about Wren's times. He was, among many things, an archiologist who uncovered much Roman work during the rebuilding of London and was also a preservationist and building doctor. His report on the condition of Salisbury Cathedral is a model of perscriptive pathology.
