If you're talking about first professional M. Arch degrees from the Ivy League schools, you're talking about four years of prior college, which accounts for some of the communications skills--as to the verbal SATs factored into the selection process.

I agree fully that communication is basic--verbal as well as graphic--since much of our job as architects is persuasion.
This is not mere "selling" (which is a real aspect, of course) but more importantly it's conveying conviction that our design proposal is the right course for the client--for whom it may be the largest investment of a lifetime, or a never-to-be repreated opportunity to build an enduring facility.
