Ask yourself Why are people directing you to architectural engineering? Is there something about you that indicates "engineer"? or architect? What are their motivations for you?
Ultimately you'll have to decide. But if you're just not sure, be aware that you may not have to decide between the two right away. Or even at all, I know many people who received double majors in architecture and architecture engineering.
For example, the school I went to (Oklahoma State Univ.) offers both degrees and in fact the architectural engineering department is in the same building/program as the architecture department. Many schools programs are separate, or their "architectural engineering" program is really just a structural/civil degree program. At my school, all the students took the same courses, including design, through 2rd year, where after that the decision was made to pursue arch or arch eng. or both.
I hope this is helpful and not too lengthy.
My father once told me, "do what you love, and the rest will follow."
