I'd rather be talking right now with you in Lebanon than chatting with my neighbors, with whom I really have little in common other than our kids and the weather.

I don't think the "good old days" were better--only different. We may have lost something, but we've gained far more--particular more opportunity to choose, rather than being born into a narrowly constrained way of life.
