i cannot think of any building type converted into a residential space, but there is a textile museum , Calico museum, in the city of A'bad, Gujarat, India. I happened to visit it while visiting the city, and i feel its an excellent case-example of an old traditional haveli (apparently a residence for the higher classes in the pre-independence era), presently it functions as an excellent museum.
thought it might help.
