This "fossil" has tried to develop a "sensibility" to two millenia of Western architecture, and to a far lesser degree to other architectural traditions of the world.

When a child draws an ideogram of a "house," as you mention, its the icon for "house" as a cultural concept. There are such things as symbolic archetypes--at least if you subscribe to the thinking of Jung, Eliade, and others (which architects ignore at the peril of architect as meaningful to their culture).
