Futurism and use technology are two different things. Our Modern fetish for glass is, in my estimation, mere Buck-Rogers fantasy, hardly rational according to real needs. On the other hand, as Richard observes, we have the technical means to do far more complex and subtle things than cladding buildings in glass. Architects are prey to memes (in the current paradigm--or cultural viruses) and the obsession with transparency is one.

On the other hand, there are amazing instances in Las Vegas of fantasy enabled by modern technology, wonders that architects deplore (and you don't find much glass in Las Vegas). This plastic fairyland in the desert is "dishonest," to the glass lovers. Glass somehow is moral, plastic is immoral. "Choose your poison," as the bartenders used to say.
