I suggest watching Tarkovsky's film about the great Icon painter Andrei Rublev.

Sometimes those that produced great beauty were stopped in a brutal manner in case they did the same for a rival of the client.

Freedom of expression ? We today have more freedom of expression but many of the restrictions are still there - they are enforced in different ways. One effective weapon has been for there to be a fuss about pushing the edges of that freedom to count tastelessness/offensiveness as freedom, often no more subtle than a child belching at a dinner table.

The problem today ? Take a look at the press.
