I agree with what you have said. Only I don't view intuition and rational approaches as so polar. I think people operate in different shades of conscious and un-conscious, sometimes different parts of the same work are operating at different levels.

My observation though is there is usually a zero-sum total of conscious and un-conscious in great design work. Think about it - even the gesture of splashing and driping paint onto a canvas is proceeded by a decision to paint that way.
