Nano technology was on another old thread and "Nature" (unless in it's philosophical sens) has nothing to do with an isotropic or anisotropic material in a beam, even if it's a wood plank!
The questionning is more about the direct relationship between matter and space... Thus the "holes". They are not side effects in architecture but a "design".

The link below is more about the way nature (the everyday one) distribute it's "holes" and has nothing to do with the way we would or could do it in a "controled" fashion (human action).
By the way, maths is a tool to represent nature's forces...:-) (just as philosophy)!
